The Photographer

Thirty years of
making magic

Based in Sydney’s inner west, Michael Kennedy is a professional commercial and advertising photographer with a serious case of wanderlust. Recognised as a Hasselblad Masters finalist multiple times, he has also exhibited in the Olive Cotton Portrait Prize and the National Portrait Prize.

My first advertising shoot was with Sir Edmund Hillary for the forgettable Daihatsu Sherpa — ok, fine, I was only the intern and mostly made terrible coffee — but I was intrigued by the magic we produced that day. I spent the 90s with a Polaroid under my arm, a second timer running in my head, working with some of the best shooters in the world.

Today I operate as a certified drone pilot, producing aerial video and stills alongside commercial videography, corporate video, social content, and television commercials. Clients include Audi, VW, Sony, Microsoft, Adidas, Rockwell and many more.

Advertising

From cosmetics and beauty to fashion labels and the latest sportscar — photography is a powerful way to introduce your brand to the world. Clients include Audi, VW, Sony, Microsoft, Adidas and Rockwell.

Automotive

Nothing gets pulses racing more than the latest model and a winding strip of asphalt over a mountain pass. The Audi R8 European Tour, Aston Martin, McLaren, Bentley and the brutal Bathurst 12 Hour.

Architecture

A labour of love. Waiting hours for the light to be just right, returning many times to capture a blade of light grazing a wall. Great design deserves great images and great images take time.

Beauty

The glamorous cousin of portraiture. The best beauty photography combines the talents of hair and makeup artists, stylists and the model — then adds something special. Something I love to shoot.

Editorial

All about telling a story. My Fighters series was a Hasselblad Masters finalist. Designers Couch called it “raw, gritty yet serene and simple photos that are masterfully executed.” Pretty happy with that.

Events

Capturing the energy and drama of an event is both fun and challenging. For the Smirnoff Nightlife Exchange Project, simultaneous parties were held across the globe. Sydney traded places with Brazil — a riot to shoot.

Portraits

The best portraits happen when pretence is stripped away and the real person is revealed. Kurt Fearnley after the Australia Day Marathon. Layne Beachley straight out of the water. Hawkey, fiercely intelligent, staring back.

Travel & Lifestyle

Recreating natural moments with a light, carefree authenticity — almost like a memory from a holiday where life was all about living in the moment. Very much how we live here in Sydney.

Video

For my first video I flew to Brussels to shoot Jean Claude Van Damme for Sony. Traumatised but unbroken, I’ve since worked with Solahart, City Tattersalls, Specialized Bikes, Western Sydney Parklands and Audi.
